The Psychological Science of Makeup

Make up explorations are not limited to the biological and chemical sciences; the psychology of makeup has been the subject of many social science investigations and experiments.

According to a 1980 study by researchers Jean Ann Graham of the University of Pennsylvania and A.J. Jouhar of Bristol-Myers Co., proper makeup application results in wearers being perceived as more physically attractive and therefore more desirable, personable and even intelligent.
So I did a little experiment of my own. I went to do an online survey to see if the claims of the researchers mentioned would be true, especially during our modern time. I took two photos of the same girl wherein she has make-up on in one photo, and no make-up in the other. Together with the photos, I attached my questionnaire.

THE PHOTO

THE QUESTIONNAIRE

I sent the photo to 4 people, 2 women and 2 men, via facebook. I wanted to have the feedback of both genders to find out whether they would have the same or different comments.

*DISCLAIMER*
THE MODEL IN THE PHOTO IS REGARDED AS A GENERAL SUBJECT OF THE EXPERIMENT; THE ANSWERS OF THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE ARE NOT DIRECTED AT THE MODEL BUT RATHER A PERCEPTION OF A STEREOTYPE.

THE RESPONDENTS & THEIR ANSWERS

1. beautiful
2. seductive
3. #2
4. #1
5. sometimes i think women who wear make up tends to feel more confident, or maybe make up is just part of their interest.

THE RESULT

The study is indeed factual. Although they had different perceptions about women wearing make-up, most of them had the same answers for questions 3 and 4. Therefore I shall conclude that 3 out of 4 persons think that a woman is more desirable with make-up, and 3 out of 4 also think that a woman is personable without make-up on.

Despite the arguments, make-up is something that you can use to enhance you natural beauty and NOT to hide behind it. But moreover, confidence is what every woman should bear with or without make-up.
