THE SCIENCE OF SMELL

http://www.perfumezilla.com
DID YOU KNOW?
(Perfume Edition)

A perfume is any substance that is used as a pleasant fragrance. It can be contained in many things such as make-up.

The low priced perfumes are called odorants. Odorants are added to products such as paper, plastics and rubber products to help hide unpleasant odors. This is also a way to entice customers to the product.

Perfumes are solutions. A solution is a mixture that appears to be a single substance, but it is made up of particles of two or more substances evenly distributed among each other.

A solution is made up of a solute dissolved in a solvent. The solute is the substance that is dissolved, and the solvent is the substance in which the solute is dissolved.

Concentration is a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent. As the concentration of perfume oils increases, so does the intensity of the scent created. The scent will last longer, too.

The Psychological Science of Makeup

Make up explorations are not limited to the biological and chemical sciences; the psychology of makeup has been the subject of many social science investigations and experiments.

According to a 1980 study by researchers Jean Ann Graham of the University of Pennsylvania and A.J. Jouhar of Bristol-Myers Co., proper makeup application results in wearers being perceived as more physically attractive and therefore more desirable, personable and even intelligent.
So I did a little experiment of my own. I went to do an online survey to see if the claims of the researchers mentioned would be true, especially during our modern time. I took two photos of the same girl wherein she has make-up on in one photo, and no make-up in the other. Together with the photos, I attached my questionnaire.

THE PHOTO

THE QUESTIONNAIRE

I sent the photo to 4 people, 2 women and 2 men, via facebook. I wanted to have the feedback of both genders to find out whether they would have the same or different comments.

THE MODEL IN THE PHOTO IS REGARDED AS A GENERAL SUBJECT OF THE EXPERIMENT; THE ANSWERS OF THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE ARE NOT DIRECTED AT THE MODEL BUT RATHER A PERCEPTION OF A STEREOTYPE.

THE RESPONDENTS & THEIR ANSWERS

Jheg Alcala
(A fourth year high school student based on Daet, Cam.Sur)

1. SIMPLE(wala make up eh)
2. Enhanced. ;))
3. Syempre photo number 2 :)
4. Syempre ulit, photo number 2. Kasi enhanced nga. Mas enhanced yung features nya. siguro yun naman yung main reason kung bakit nagme-makeup diba? :)
5. Women wear make up just to enhance their features, other than that flaws are concealed. ENHANCEMENT AND CONCEALMENT.

Kelvin Cantero

(A freshman college student at Bicol University)

1. Common or Plain
2. Edgy
3. 2
4.1
5. Cool and "May dating", but for a guy, i dnt think women wearng make-up on a daily basis is practical, not to mention the it's effects on the skin. :D*no offense to some brands. :p

:DPag may make up, maraming aausin. pag wala, worry free. :D kaya may advantage ung wlamg make up. LOL
but it's still AWESOME on Occasions (D-uh).

Cynthia Fe Ras
(A student at Divine Word College of Legazpi)

1. simple
2. coquettish
3. photo 1
4. 1
5.) woman who wears make up is not confident of her own self. she is not contented of what she looks.

Marie Santelices
(A student at Martin Luther King High School, Riverside, California)

1. beautiful
2. seductive
3. #2
4. #1
5. sometimes i think women who wear make up tends to feel more confident, or maybe make up is just part of their interest.

THE RESULT

The study is indeed factual. Although they had different perceptions about women wearing make-up, most of them had the same answers for questions 3 and 4. Therefore I shall conclude that 3 out of 4 persons think that a woman is more desirable with make-up, and 3 out of 4 also think that a woman is personable without make-up on.

Despite the arguments, make-up is something that you can use to enhance you natural beauty and NOT to hide behind it. But moreover, confidence is what every woman should bear with or without make-up.

The Science of Makeup

http://4.bp.blogspot.com

Makeup is proven to make women look more attractive. The question is "why?".

It’s not “why do we wear/use it?” but rather “why does it work?”…

In theory, one could put color anywhere on the face. But there is a certain principle that all cultures agreed on and that is Makeup is used to even the complexion, darken the eyes, rosy up the cheeks and redden the lips, no matter if you’re a Japanese Geisha, an relative of Queen Cleopatra or a modern woman glam-ing up for a Saturday night out.

According to Dr. Bernhard Fink, a professor at the University of Göttingen who studies the evolutionary psychology of human mate preferences, “The maintenance of youthful features and the exaggeration of female typical traits can be found in almost every culture.”

THE SCIENCE BEHIND BEAUTY & HOW TO ACHIEVE IT (Part II)

Large, Bright Eyes
A person’s eyes are usually the first facial feature noticed. They make an immediate impression. Large, bright eyes are part of the “baby face” youthful look.

GO GET IT!
If you were born with big, beautiful peepers, you are certainly blessed. But don’t fret because there are many ways to achieve it. Curled eyelashes, mascara, shapely brows all contribute to ‘opening up” the eyes. Excess skin tissue on the eyelid, giving a saggy appearance, can be removed with cosmetic surgery.

Wide Set Eyes
Scientists found that eyes that are set farther apart are considered far more desirable than those that are close together. This is because a balanced facial ratio coincides with the ‘golden ratio’, indicating symmetry. However, psychologists that have considered the ‘gold ratio’ in terms of perception of beauty have had mixed results. Some test takers were not attracted to these so-called perfect dimensions.

GO GET IT!
It is impossible to surgically move your eye sockets. But there are eye makeup techniques, like avoiding dark eye shadow on the inner corners of your eyelids can create an illusion of nicely spaced eyes.

Large Forehead
Larger foreheads are considered more attractive for women because, once again, it contributes to the “baby face” look. And studies show that the “baby face” look is thought to represent youth.

GO GET IT!
Keeping your hair off your face can go a long way in maximizing the look of your forehead. Try sporting a pony tail if you’re not naturally born with it. A cosmetic brow lift can increase its size by pulling the skin up.

White Teeth
A gleaming white smile conveys youth and health, and no matter what your age, a bright smile is advantageous. According to the American Dental Association as we age, our tooth enamel wears away, revealing the darker tissue underneath. Years of smoking, taking certain medications and drinking dark beverages like coffee or wine, can also discolor our teeth.

GO GET IT!
Avoid things that can stain your teeth such as coffee and wine. But if you can’t help it, be sure brighten your teeth with the use of whitening mouthwash and toothpaste. In fact, there’s an innovation from Close-up which can whiten your teeth even with just one brush! Now that’s cheaper and easier than taking a regular trip to your dentist.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND BEAUTY & HOW TO ACHIEVE IT (Part I)

.

We may sing with our hearts to Lady Gaga’s BORN THIS WAY, but it doesn’t mean there are still some of us out there who doesn’t want to change something about them.

Researchers investigated and found out what makes a perfect face. They found that certain traits are universally considered desirable.

And I’ve got “almost” full-proof ways to achieve them!

Symmetry

The symmetry of the face is one of the best indicators of attractiveness. When one side of a face is a mirror image of the other, a beautiful face is born.

GO GET IT!
The science of aesthetic surgery comes in when talking about SYMMETRY, such as facial implants, injecting, and sculpting. Asymmetrical haircuts which can disguise an uneven face are also very imminent.

Full Lips
High estrogen levels in post-pubescent women make lips fuller. As we age and hormone levels decrease, our lips tend to lose their color and plumpness. With the advent of unusually fat lips appearing lately on the big screen, it’s no wonder many women are striving for voluminous lips.

GO GET IT!
There are always tips and tricks to achieve fuller looking lips without going under the knife. Take note to stick with glossy lipstick because this aids the illusion of plumpness. In terms of Cosmetic procedures, what they do is transfer fat or filler into the lips to boost their size.

Small Nose
Women with small features or “baby faces” are often considered more attractive because they appear more youthful, according to research completed at Universities of Regensburg and Rostock in Germany.

GO GET IT!
Sadly there’s not much that can be done to downsize the appearance of a larger nose, unless you opt for surgery. But you can always turn to complicated makeup work like creating a shade on the nose to make it look smaller. You can also consider parting your hair on the side instead of down the middle to gain the illusion of a smaller nose.

Curvy Eyebrows
Evenly balanced eyebrows add symmetry to your face. Shapely, arched eyebrows also help define your eyes.

GO GET IT!
Nowadays, you can easily have your brows tattooed. That means you can have both semi-permanent or permanent brow color and shape. But that would mean going into an expensive cosmetic clinic. For an easier way to alter the shape of your brows, waxing or plucking is the way to go.

Clear Skin
It’s no secret that skin that glows and is wrinkle and blemish free is most desirable and youthful. A 2006 study in the journal “Evolution and Human Behavior” found that skin tone and evenness was a predictor of facial attractiveness.

GO GET IT!
Keep skin moisturized and protect it from the harmful rays of the sun. Procedures like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and pulse light therapy can help skin that is already damaged. Treatments can be customized to how badly the skin is already damaged.

CURIOUS ABOUT CAMELS

We all hate having to be under the heat of the sun, or even just plain feeling hot especially during our weather today where hot becomes hotter. But there is one mammal that does not complain at all.
A camel’s body is so amazingly crafted to survive in the desert and even its harshest climates. They can even survive without food and water for long periods of time. This ability is due to their body’s ability to store fat in their humps and store water in the lining of their stomachs.
They also have their wide, padded feet which grips well on loose sandy soil that also stops them from sinking into the sand. Camels also has an insulating wool coat keeps out both the heat of the day and the cold of the night. Their hairy eyelashes, ears and slit nostrils keep out the desert dust and sand. And, if that wasn’t enough camels are also extremely simple about the food they eat, consuming anything from thorny shrubs to desert thistles.

DID YOU KNOW?

RENEWABLE ENERGY FUN FACTS:

1.      We can decrease CO2 by using renewable energy sources to provide our daily energy needs. We could omit 20, 000 pounds less of carbon dioxide, 50 pounds less of nitrogen oxide and 70 pounds less of sulfur dioxide into our atmosphere.
2.      Did you know that we could meet our energy needs through the means of water as a renewable energy? 28.3 million consumers out there already did.
3.      A geothermal plant omits no nitrogen oxides, extremely little sulfur dioxide, and 1,000 – 2,000 times less carbon dioxide gases.
4.      2,700 megawatts of electricity produced by geothermal energy sources is equivalent to the power produced by 3 nuclear power plants.  This is enough energy to provide power to 3.5 million homes.
5.      Every hour enough sunlight reaches the earth’s surface that could potentially provide the world with power for one year.
6.      There are five main forms of renewable energy: solar, wind, water, bio-fuel and geothermal (heat from the earth).
7.      A world record was set in 1990 when a solar-powered aircraft flew across the USA in 21 stages, using no fuel at all.

Replace and Save
(google images)

Out with the old and in with the new and energy saving fluorescent light bulbs. Although these fluorescent light bulbs are a bit pricier, you will still save more in the long run. An 18-watt fluorescent light bulb, over its lifetime, uses far less electricity than a 75-watt incandescent bulb.

TURN IT OFF & UNPLUG IT

We’ve all experience being annoyed with our parents with their constant reminders to turn off unused appliances and to unplug the cords as well. But the truth of the matter is, this is why most of our electrical bills go up. Even though appliances are turned off, if they are still plugged, they still use up electricity. So let’s not be brats anymore and do as our folks say. It’ll keep us all safe and more environmentally helpful.

DITCH THE DISHWASHER
(google images)

This might not be applicable to all, but using a dishwasher creates more than the needed heat to actually dry the dishes. So go away with yet another electrical appliance and save more money and energy by simply letting your dishes air dry after washing them. Placing them on a rack which can catch the dripping water is also a very efficient idea.

REPAIR or REPLACE
(google images)

Did you know that a leaky faucet wastes up to 30,000 gallons of water a year? Call a professional to repair or replace the leak problem at once, and save the earth and yourself from a lot of cash.

LAPTOP over DESKTOP
(google images)

If you’re just about to buy one and you’re still a bit torn, choose the laptop. And if you already own both, use the laptop more often than the desktop. Laptops draw only 15 to 25 watts during regular use compared to the 150 watts used by a conventional desktop.
